Writing as Therapy Journal - Journeys

Our lives are filled with journeys of both the outer and inner kinds. The two sorts need a journal to capture them. Sometimes, we’ll be recording a trip around the Cape of Good Hope or five days in Rome. At other times, without anything mystical being meant by this, we’ll be involved in tracking an inner journey: a trip towards a different kind of relationship with our work, our families or our partners.

Both physical and emotional journeys need careful monitoring, or we are likely to become lost, directionless and forgetful. We need to record the most significant moments that befall us: the surprise we feel in a new place (it might be the mountains behind Tokyo or the shores of the Bosphorus) or in front of a new idea or emotion (perhaps we’re just reading Lao-Tzu or properly falling in love for the first time, with our child or a partner). We should appreciate the triumphs and the difficulties of our journeys – just as a climber might record how they endured a blizzard, or what they learned from a fall. A journal is a small, elegant tool that makes up for our endemic forgetfulness. It sums up mental and physical travel; it gives longer life to fleeting inspirations and sensations; it decodes experiences; it preserves the treasures we have stumbled upon along the way. It will stand as a record of who we are.

The School of Life Writing as Therapy Journal

Having so many vague feelings of hurt, envy, anxiety, and regret, but for the most part we never stop to make sense of them. It’s too un-comfortable and especially difficult because we are so often busy and frazzled, hyper-connected yet a bit lonely. To really understand what we feel and think, we must turn away from distractions, common sense, and other people’s opinions. We need to develop intimacy with ourselves.

Our un-thought thoughts contain clues as to our needs and our longer-term direction. Writing them out is key. Through writing, we recognise patterns to observe and, perhaps, outgrow. We can strategise – a remarkably neglected task. We can ask ourselves why we make the choices we do. We can question faulty narratives and create new ones. We can consider ideas before we commit to them, and reinforce good ideas we already know.

Writing is ultimately the task of discovering and developing what we think. There could hardly be a more important personal goal.

The School of Life at Misc-store Amsterdam

At Misc-store we carry three Writing as Therapy Journals: Journeys, Night Thoughts and Projects. We also carry their prompt cards for confidenceself knowledge and even career crisis, and we love their books on Small Pleasures.

The School of Life is devoted to developing emotional intelligence through the help of culture. We address such issues as how to find fulfilling work, how to master the art of relationships, how to understand one’s past, how to achieve calm and how better to understand, and where necessary change, the world.

We love The School of Life because their items make a great gift for ourselves and others. Back in 2013 we started with a range of The School of Life items in store, and we are so happy that we can extend our range with all their new items, focusing on the job we have, appreciating small pleasures and the things that might go unnoticed.

About The School of Life

The School of Life at Misc-store Amsterdam

Alain de Botton founded The School of Life in 2008. His aim was to make philosophy — long seen as the inaccessible, inauthentic stuff of academies and archives — a functional aspect of modern life. The care with which ancient philosophers thought about their lives remains a valuable antidote to the generalised anxiety of our era.

The school thus posits that ideas of Plato, Aristotle and the Stoics are as relevant to us today as they were in ancient Greece. Even if Epicurus never had social media burnout, understanding his thinking can lead us to a healthier relationship with our phones — and by extension, with one another.

Developing emotional intelligence in the workplace
The working world can feel, at times, to operate with a dog-eat-dog intensity. We are often made to feel anxious or powerless by our jobs. Our colleagues can irritate or undermine, our bosses can demand too much while giving too little, our clients can be rude and difficult to please, and our assets are never quite liquid enough. So it goes.

We began stocking The School of Life’s series on work, gratitude and pleasure as a way of thinking through these issues. We admire these series for their capacity to stimulate reflection, and their ability to give a new perspective on age old problems. At its core, it is a set of strategies for finding meaning in the modern world.

The School of Life has had its own corner in our Amsterdam shop, and we’re proud to be one of their stockists in the Netherlands. You can browse our selection in store or on our web shop online.

Misc Store supports
climate change solutions &
plants a tree for every order

Importing from countries as far as Japan & shipping worldwide has more of an impact than we would like. That is why we plant a tree for every order + we plant an additional 2 trees each day.

Furthermore, we offset the individual carbon footprint of our staff, including travel per individual under 8,000 km by car or 2 short-haul return flights annually, by funding climate change solutions through Ecologi.
A selection of these climate projects are shown here.
