The Kokuyo Perpanep Ultra Smooth Paper A5 is recommended to use with fineliners and fountain pens. The paper surface is pressed extremely flat for ultimate smoothness. This allows your pen to glide across the paper so you can write as fast as your flow of thoughts. Brings out the shading of inks.

This Tsuru Tsuru Ultra Smooth paper is 96 gsm, featuring a 6 mm steno layout and light grey format on ivory paper, which is easy on the eyes.

By combining different layouts with different paper textures, Kokuyo provides us with ample choice to find the perfect writing experience - hence the name Perpanep, a combination between the words pen and paper.

The Perpanep notebooks open entirely flat, so they can also be used as an A4 format. Kokuyo uses recycled pulp for the cover and forest certified wood for the inner paper.

Also available at Misc-store with 3 mm Grid and 4 mm Dot Grid layout, or with Sara Sara (medium smooth) or Zara Zara (textured) paper.

What is Kokuyo Perpanep Notebook?

While creating Perpanep, Kokuyo focused not on just the paper quality itself, but also emphasized the different combinations of paper and pen that bring out the best writing experiences. They created 3 types of paper that users can choose depending on their writing instrument of choice and preferred writing feel.

The Perpanep notebooks open completely flat, to such a degree that one can photograph them from the top and not see any shading in between the pages. The material is completely sustainable and eco-friendly and has been utilized in a simple but efficient design.

Because of their dimensions and slim profile, the Perpanep notebooks are also very portable - you can easily take more than one on the road with you to cover different needs and situations.

The three Perpanep paper formats

The Kokuyo Perpanep notebooks are available in three different paper textures.

Tsuru Tsuru, an "ultra-smooth" paper type that feels very smooth to the touch and is best suitable for fountain pens and fineliners. It is aimed at people who look for the lightest and smoothest writing experience.

Sara Sara, a medium smooth paper type, is the more balanced option and best suitable for ballpoint and rollerball. It feels smooth to the touch with a hint of tooth.

Zara Zara, the textured paper type, is a rougher paper that is geared towards people who love clear paper feedback while writing, and want to hear the paper glide over the pen. It has a grainy touch and is best suitable for fountain pens and fineliners.

In Japan, double words represent sounds, and the tsuru-tsuru, sara-sara, and zara-zara represent the sounds the paper "makes". On the cover of the notebooks you will also see three lines, the top a straight line, the middle a gentle flow, and the lower a zigzag: they visually represent the paper types.

Kokuyo x Misc-store Amsterdam

Imagine an Office Depot catalogue, ranging from office supplies, filing system to facility management. Think of the total number of brands and suppliers in this Office Depot catalogue. Kokuyo's Catalogue is exactly this, but all items fall under their own brand. The product range is huge.

Here in Amsterdam, we flicked through the pages of this catalogue, in awe of its magnitude, smiled by some smart office solution and stationery items and surprised by the variety of products. From this catalogue, the Think of Things selection in their Harajuku, Tokyo store, and the Kokuyo Design Awards, we realized Kokuyo is true to its heritage, but also constantly thinking and moving forward.

At Misc-store, both in our Amsterdam shop as online, we proudly carry some of Kokuyo's earlier steel desk items. The designs have not changed since their product launch. We also carry their famed Campus notebooks and some of their contest to market entries form their Kokuyo Design Award, such as the beetle tip marker and the Kadokeshi Eraser.

About Kokuyo

Founded in 1905, Kokuyo quickly became the industry leader in paper products — from account books to letter paper, forms and notebooks.

In 1960, Kokuyo ventured into a transition “from paper to metal”, producing their first filing cabinet. With the economy of that day and age — increasing complexity of administration x economic growth — there was a growing demand for know-how and office supplies to manage the ever-mounting pile of paperwork effectively.

Over the years, Kokuyo has developed various products that enrich lives. That feeling when you open up a fresh new notebook and see the blank page. That feeling when you put pen to paper and let the ideas flow out. Whether through stationery, furniture, or spatial design, Kokuyo strives to unleash people's inner creativity.

Creation is an expression of uniqueness. Bringing out people’s individuality contributes toward a better future. Kokuyo continues to stimulate people’s inner creativity to bring out their uniqueness.
