The School of Life Healthy Happy Minds is a Children’s Guide to Emotional Wellbeing. A read for kids aged 9 and up, but even more for the parent. Written for your child, but it may provide insight in the thoughts kids may have. And a language to talk about it with them.
Our minds are beautifully complicated and brilliant machines. For much of our lives, these machines run efficiently with minimal maintenance. However, just like our other organs, they do require some proper attention every now and then and recognising this at an early age can help as children progress into adulthood.
This is a guide designed to help children (and their parents) become more aware of their emotional needs and examines a range of topics that might give their minds difficulties, for example:
- When parents don't seem to understand us
- When we are finding it hard to make friends
- When we feel angry, anxious or lack confidence
- When school feels boring or difficult
We explore a range of common scenarios encountered by children and talk about some of the very best ideas to help deal with them. By offering a sympathetic and supportive framework, Happy, Healthy Minds encourages children to open up, explore their feelings and face the dilemmas of growing up armed with emotional intelligence.

Extracts from the Book:
“People behave badly — they get angry or they do and say mean things — when they are afraid of something. Usually you can't see what they are afraid of and they don't tell you. They feel they can't explain their fear, and they are worried that if they tried to explain no one would understand. So they cover up their fears. They try to look as if they aren't afraid at all. Maybe this happens to you sometimes.”
“Both anger and sadness start off with frustration, with a wish that has not been fulfilled. But the frustration will make us sad when it is expected. It might make us furious when it is a surprise. What makes us angry are frustrations, large or small, that we have not budgeted for; that we didn’t expect to happen.”
“If we know we might look stupid, because everyone does at one time or another, it gives us permission to try things where we risk looking stupid — which includes all the most interesting situations in life. If you are too concerned about looking sensible, you’ll never audition for the school play, paint a crazy picture, or try speaking a foreign language.”
The School of Life at Misc-store Amsterdam
The School of Life is devoted to developing emotional intelligence through the help of culture. We address such issues as how to find fulfilling work, how to master the art of relationships, how to understand one’s past, how to achieve calm and how better to understand, and where necessary change, the world.
At Misc-store, we love The School of Life because their items make a great gift for ourselves and others. Back in 2013 we started with a range of The School of Life items in store, and we are so happy that we can extend our range with all their new items, focusing on the job we have, appreciating small pleasures and the things that might go unnoticed.
About The School of Life
Alain de Botton founded The School of Life in 2008. His aim was to make philosophy — long seen as the inaccessible, inauthentic stuff of academies and archives — a functional aspect of modern life. The care with which ancient philosophers thought about their lives remains a valuable antidote to the generalised anxiety of our era.
The school thus posits that ideas of Plato, Aristotle and the Stoics are as relevant to us today as they were in ancient Greece. Even if Epicurus never had social media burnout, understanding his thinking can lead us to a healthier relationship with our phones — and by extension, with one another.
Developing emotional intelligence in the workplace
The working world can feel, at times, to operate with a dog-eat-dog intensity. We are often made to feel anxious or powerless by our jobs. Our colleagues can irritate or undermine, our bosses can demand too much while giving too little, our clients can be rude and difficult to please, and our assets are never quite liquid enough. So it goes.
We began stocking The School of Life’s series on work, gratitude and pleasure as a way of thinking through these issues. We admire these series for their capacity to stimulate reflection, and their ability to give a new perspective on age old problems. At its core, it is a set of strategies for finding meaning in the modern world.
The School of Life has had its own corner in our Amsterdam shop, and we’re proud to be one of their stockists in the Netherlands. You can browse our selection in store or on our web shop online.

climate change solutions &
plants a tree for every order
Importing from countries as far as Japan & shipping worldwide has more of an impact than we would like. That is why we plant a tree for every order + we plant an additional 2 trees each day.
Furthermore, we offset the individual carbon footprint of our staff, including travel per individual under 8,000 km by car or 2 short-haul return flights annually, by funding climate change solutions through Ecologi.
A selection of these climate projects are shown here.
