Know Yourself Prompt Cards is a set of 60 prompt cards designed to help you in getting to know yourself a little better in life. Designed to assist you in a journey of self-knowledge. They present a range of ideas and questions that can help to understand ourselves better. Each card carries an exercise on one side and a piece of analysis on the reverse side. Helping gain insight and clarity on that ever elusive subject: yourself.
It’s not as easy as it seems to really understand oneself. Who we are, what we want, how we feel and why we react the way we do. Not knowing yourself well enough can cause us to make terrible decisions; getting into the wrong relationship, picking an unsatisfactory job. No wonder Socrates summed up all the counsel of philosophy in only two words: 'Know Yourself'.
We believe they make a great gift for anyone, and these Know Yourself cards are perfect to put things in perspective and to challenger yourself.
How to Use the Cards
You might...
-
Lay out the cards out on a table and contemplate the questions at hand.
-
Go through one card each day to fully focus on each question and encourage long term self reflection.
-
Note down with a pen and paper some of the changes you would like to make and inner milestones you would like to reach moving forward.
Example Cards
-
Q: If I knew I couldn’t fail, in my professional life, I’d try to...
A: We are often so scared of being humiliated by the gap between our aspirations and our reality that we don’t even dare to voice any aspiration - thereby conclusively ensuring that it can never come true. We owe it to ourselves to state what we deep down feel we could do and be - even if it never comes right. -
Q: What sort of things have made you envious recently?
A: We’re taught to be appalled by envy and never to feel it. But the things and people we envy in fact provide us with a very important map of our desires - which can teach us vital clues about ourselves. Keep a diary of envious feelings; and allow an autobiography of your future to emerge from it.

The School of Life at Misc-store Amsterdam
At Misc-store we carry three Writing as Therapy Journals: Journeys, Night Thoughts and Projects. We also carry their prompt cards for confidence, self knowledge and even career crisis, and we love their books on Small Pleasures.
The School of Life is devoted to developing emotional intelligence through the help of culture. We address such issues as how to find fulfilling work, how to master the art of relationships, how to understand one’s past, how to achieve calm and how better to understand, and where necessary change, the world.
We love The School of Life because their items make a great gift for ourselves and others. Back in 2013 we started with a range of The School of Life items in store, and we are so happy that we can extend our range with all their new items, focusing on the job we have, appreciating small pleasures and the things that might go unnoticed.

About The School of Life
Alain de Botton founded The School of Life in 2008. His aim was to make philosophy — long seen as the inaccessible, inauthentic stuff of academies and archives — a functional aspect of modern life. The care with which ancient philosophers thought about their lives remains a valuable antidote to the generalised anxiety of our era.
The school thus posits that ideas of Plato, Aristotle and the Stoics are as relevant to us today as they were in ancient Greece. Even if Epicurus never had social media burnout, understanding his thinking can lead us to a healthier relationship with , for example, our phones — and by extension, with one another.
We began stocking The School of Life’s series on work, gratitude and pleasure as a way of thinking through modern day issues. We admire their series for the capacity to stimulate reflection, and their ability to give a new perspective on age old problems. At its core, it is a set of strategies for finding meaning in the modern world — so that we can appreciate small pleasures and the things that might go unnoticed.
