Writing as Therapy Journal - Projects

Every good life should be rich in projects: new approaches to how to get things done. Our projects might be for novels, businesses, film scripts, children, trips, home decoration schemes or political ambitions. What unites all projects is that they need a safe initial place to germinate, somewhere with a lot of space and calm, where no one will laugh or ask the wrong sort of questions, and where first thoughts can be carefully built up into the robust proposals that the world will one day require of us.

A good project rarely comes to us in one go. Our minds tend to come up with fragments, which tumble out in the wrong order, at weird times of day and night. That’s why we need a journal on hand to collect the fragments and allow us the opportunity to discern their logical shape and true identities. Working out what we really think and want is remarkably tricky. It might be the secret to a good life. We’re sometimes told that anyone can have a good idea and that execution is all. This journal disagrees. Good ideas are very thin on the ground and easily get snuffed out. Giving up too soon is a constant danger. A project that a while back seemed full of promise (even a touch brilliant) can fade and succumb to a fatal lack of confidence, time or simple organisation.

Writing helps – as do diagrams, charts, lists, under-linings, spidery connecting arrows and pages of liberating crossings out. Our minds get in the mood at surprising moments. A thought falls into shape as you’re boarding a plane; a new angle strikes you while waiting for a friend in a bar; stuck in traffic a connection dawns on you and you feel compelled to reach for the journal before the lights change. Our projects are a chance to externalise what’s good inside us: things like creativity, rigour, wit, elegance – things developing in us that not everyone can see yet. A project is a statement of faith in the possibilities of our own growth.

The School of Life Writing as Therapy Journal Having so many vague feelings of hurt, envy, anxiety, and regret, but for the most part we never stop to make sense of them. It’s too un-comfortable and especially difficult because we are so often busy and frazzled, hyper-connected yet a bit lonely. To really understand what we feel and think, we must turn away from distractions, common sense, and other people’s opinions. We need to develop intimacy with ourselves.

Our un-thought thoughts contain clues as to our needs and our longer-term direction. Writing them out is key. Through writing, we recognise patterns to observe and, perhaps, outgrow. We can strategise – a remarkably neglected task. We can ask ourselves why we make the choices we do. We can question faulty narratives and create new ones. We can consider ideas before we commit to them, and reinforce good ideas we already know.

Writing is ultimately the task of discovering and developing what we think. There could hardly be a more important personal goal.

The School of Life at Misc-store Amsterdam

At Misc-store we carry three Writing as Therapy Journals: Journeys, Night Thoughts and Projects. We also carry their prompt cards for confidenceself knowledge and even career crisis, and we love their books on Small Pleasures.

The School of Life is devoted to developing emotional intelligence through the help of culture. We address such issues as how to find fulfilling work, how to master the art of relationships, how to understand one’s past, how to achieve calm and how better to understand, and where necessary change, the world.

We love The School of Life because their items make a great gift for ourselves and others. Back in 2013 we started with a range of The School of Life items in store, and we are so happy that we can extend our range with all their new items, focusing on the job we have, appreciating small pleasures and the things that might go unnoticed.

About The School of Life

The School of Life at Misc-store Amsterdam

Alain de Botton founded The School of Life in 2008. His aim was to make philosophy — long seen as the inaccessible, inauthentic stuff of academies and archives — a functional aspect of modern life. The care with which ancient philosophers thought about their lives remains a valuable antidote to the generalised anxiety of our era.

The school thus posits that ideas of Plato, Aristotle and the Stoics are as relevant to us today as they were in ancient Greece. Even if Epicurus never had social media burnout, understanding his thinking can lead us to a healthier relationship with , for example, our phones — and by extension, with one another.

We began stocking The School of Life’s series on work, gratitude and pleasure as a way of thinking through modern day issues. We admire their series for the capacity to stimulate reflection, and their ability to give a new perspective on age old problems. At its core, it is a set of strategies for finding meaning in the modern world — so that we can appreciate small pleasures and the things that might go unnoticed.
