The School of Life's Digital Connections: to Foster Closeness at a Distance

Connecting with someone is not a question of being in the same space as them; it depends on sharing the right parts of each other’s imaginations and deeper selves. The best kinds of conversations can make people on opposite sides of the world feel closer than ever before.

Digital Connections contains exercises, questions and prompts designed to coax people into the richest sorts of interactions. The tone is a mixture of humorous, kind, vulnerable and touching. These cards can help us to communicate online at the authentic and emotional level...

These cards can help us to communicate online at the authentic and emotional level we long for and deserve.

Example Cards:

'Don't feel a constant pressure to talk. Take 80 seconds (you can time it on a phone) to be together in silence. It can feel awkward at first, then unexpectedly close and warm. You can look at each other or gaze around, as though being just yourselves is now completely enough.'
'On a sheet of paper, write down the following: 1) something you regret 2) Something you want to forgive 3) Something you long to share 4) An area you want to improve in. Show each other your pieces of paper and discuss.'
'Draw how you're currently feeling in an abstract way - it might be a jagged squiggle, some carefully hatched squares, or a thoughtful zebra. Hold it up to your conversation partner and discuss.'

The School of Life at Misc-store Amsterdam

The School of Life is devoted to developing emotional intelligence through the help of culture. We address such issues as how to find fulfilling work, how to master the art of relationships, how to understand one’s past, how to achieve calm and how better to understand, and where necessary change, the world.

At Misc-store, we love The School of Life because their items make a great gift for ourselves and others. Back in 2013 we started with a range of The School of Life items in store, and we are so happy that we can extend our range with all their new items, focusing on the job we have, appreciating small pleasures and the things that might go unnoticed.

About The School of Life

Alain de Botton founded The School of Life in 2008. His aim was to make philosophy — long seen as the inaccessible, inauthentic stuff of academies and archives — a functional aspect of modern life. The care with which ancient philosophers thought about their lives remains a valuable antidote to the generalised anxiety of our era.

The school thus posits that ideas of Plato, Aristotle and the Stoics are as relevant to us today as they were in ancient Greece. Even if Epicurus never had social media burnout, understanding his thinking can lead us to a healthier relationship with our phones — and by extension, with one another.

Developing emotional intelligence in the workplace
The working world can feel, at times, to operate with a dog-eat-dog intensity. We are often made to feel anxious or powerless by our jobs. Our colleagues can irritate or undermine, our bosses can demand too much while giving too little, our clients can be rude and difficult to please, and our assets are never quite liquid enough. So it goes.

We began stocking The School of Life’s series on work, gratitude and pleasure as a way of thinking through these issues. We admire these series for their capacity to stimulate reflection, and their ability to give a new perspective on age old problems. At its core, it is a set of strategies for finding meaning in the modern world.

The School of Life has had its own corner in our Amsterdam shop, and we’re proud to be one of their stockists in the Netherlands. You can browse our selection in store or on our web shop online.
