The School of Life

A Replacement of Religion

€ 16,00

Many of us find ourselves in the odd situation of not believing in religion, but nevertheless being interested in it, moved by it and sympathetic to some of its aims. We may enjoy religious art and architecture, music and community, and even some of the rituals - while being unable to believe in the divine. A Replacement of Religion is about those feelings and what we might do about them.

The School of Life is fascinated by the gaps left in modern society by the gradual disappearance of religion. As a secular organisation, they’re interested in the difficulties we face in finding a sense of community, how rituals are dying out and the way in which we sometimes crave the solemn quiet found in religious buildings.

A Replacement for Religion lays out how The School of Life might absorb the best lessons of religion, update them for our times and incorporate them into our daily lives: it tries to rescue some of what remains wise and useful from that which (for many of us) no longer seems quite true.

Extracts from the Book:

On The Ills of Modernity

“The conditions of modernity are in many ways profoundly better than those under which the vast majority of humanity lived for more or less the whole of history. But, along with its manifest benefits, modernity has brought a special range of troubles into our lives which we would be wise to try to unpick and understand.”

On Credo

“We know - in theory - about resisting perfectionism, accepting melancholy, embracing an ordinary life, keeping room for the idea of tragedy and looking beyond anthropocentrism. And yet, in practice, any such ideas have a notoriously weak ability to motivate our actual behaviour and emotions. Our knowledge is both embedded within us and yet it is ineffective for us.

On Community

“The example of religions opens up a richer sense of what community could be - and in particular, and very concretely, it offers us a set of ideas about how we might go about constructing new kinds of community centers, which would capture the highest hopes for a more collective way of life.”

The School of Life at Misc-store Amsterdam

At Misc-store we carry three Writing as Therapy Journals: Journeys, Night Thoughts and Projects. We also carry their prompt cards for confidenceself knowledge and even career crisis, and we love their books on Small Pleasures.

The School of Life is devoted to developing emotional intelligence through the help of culture. We address such issues as how to find fulfilling work, how to master the art of relationships, how to understand one’s past, how to achieve calm and how better to understand, and where necessary change, the world.

We love The School of Life because their items make a great gift for ourselves and others. Back in 2013 we started with a range of The School of Life items in store, and we are so happy that we can extend our range with all their new items, focusing on the job we have, appreciating small pleasures and the things that might go unnoticed.

About The School of Life

Alain de Botton founded The School of Life in 2008. His aim was to make philosophy — long seen as the inaccessible, inauthentic stuff of academies and archives — a functional aspect of modern life. The care with which ancient philosophers thought about their lives remains a valuable antidote to the generalised anxiety of our era.

The school thus posits that ideas of Plato, Aristotle and the Stoics are as relevant to us today as they were in ancient Greece. Even if Epicurus never had social media burnout, understanding his thinking can lead us to a healthier relationship with our phones — and by extension, with one another.

Developing emotional intelligence in the workplace
The working world can feel, at times, to operate with a dog-eat-dog intensity. We are often made to feel anxious or powerless by our jobs. Our colleagues can irritate or undermine, our bosses can demand too much while giving too little, our clients can be rude and difficult to please, and our assets are never quite liquid enough. So it goes.

We began stocking The School of Life’s series on work, gratitude and pleasure as a way of thinking through these issues. We admire these series for their capacity to stimulate reflection, and their ability to give a new perspective on age old problems. At its core, it is a set of strategies for finding meaning in the modern world.

The School of Life has had its own corner in our Amsterdam shop, and we’re proud to be one of their stockists in the Netherlands. You can browse our selection in store or on our web shop online.
