Career Crisis Prompt Cards is a set of 60 cards to help you work through moments of career crisis.

Finding the job we love and that makes use of our talents is one of the greatest challenges in life. Unsurprisingly, many of us regularly hit career crises: moments of anxiety about finding our true vocation in the time we have left. The trick is not to get stuck in how we think about what we should do.

These incisive and wise prompt cards are made to unblock career crises and free up our thinking around work. To help set us on a path to a job that will tap into the best aspects of us.

Example Cards:

"What job is the person doing whom you would most like to see fail? There are clues here."

"A job you love doesn’t mean that there is only one job you could love. So it will always be reasonable to have regrets."

"Not having a plan quickly puts us at the mercy of those who have one."

"Which of these are you – in the end – best at: numbers, words, images, people?"

"A palliative nurse described one of the major regrets of the dying as the wish that they’d had the courage to live a life true to themselves, not the life others expected of them."

About The School of Life

Alain de Botton founded The School of Life in 2008. His aim was to make philosophy — long seen as the inaccessible, inauthentic stuff of academies and archives — a functional aspect of modern life. The care with which ancient philosophers thought about their lives remains a valuable antidote to the generalised anxiety of our era.

The school thus posits that ideas of Plato, Aristotle and the Stoics are as relevant to us today as they were in ancient Greece. Even if Epicurus never had social media burnout, understanding his thinking can lead us to a healthier relationship with our phones — and by extension, with one another.

Developing emotional intelligence in the workplace
The working world can feel, at times, to operate with a dog-eat-dog intensity. We are often made to feel anxious or powerless by our jobs. Our colleagues can irritate or undermine, our bosses can demand too much while giving too little, our clients can be rude and difficult to please, and our assets are never quite liquid enough. So it goes.

We began stocking The School of Life’s series on work, gratitude and pleasure as a way of thinking through these issues. We admire these series for their capacity to stimulate reflection, and their ability to give a new perspective on age old problems. At its core, it is a set of strategies for finding meaning in the modern world.

The School of Life has had its own corner in our Amsterdam shop, and we’re proud to be one of their stockists in the Netherlands. You can browse our selection in store or on our web shop online.
